Born on 7th May 1861, to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, Rabindranath Tagore was a towering polymath, poet, writer, essayist and artist. Finding early success as a young writer in Bengal, it was not until 1913, the year he won the Nobel Prize for literature, that he found a worldwide audience. Awarded to him because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West, it made him the first-ever nonEuropean to have won the honour. Amongst his vast canon of literary works, which feature songs, essays, novels and short stories, are Gora, Gitanjali, Kabuliwala, My boyhood days and nationalism. His works were deeply rooted in the social issues of the time and the position of women in society in general. In 1918, the foundation stone for VisvaBharati, an experimental University in Santiniketan, was laid. This University was to make Santiniketan the connecting thread between India and the world, a centre for the study of humanity somewhere beyond the limits of nation and Geography. Rabindranath Tagore died on 7th August 1941, in his childhood home in Jorasanko, Kolkata. This set includes Gora, Gitanjali, Kabuliwala, My boyhood days and nationalism.
