Jules Verne, a French writer born in 1828, was one of the first pioneers of the science-fiction genre. He wrote about space, air and underwater voyages before working aircraft and submarines were invented and before any means of space travel had been devised. Because of his visionary themes and novels he is often referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction". Apart from more famous novels like Around the World in Eighty Days, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, From Earth to the Moon, Five Weeks in a Balloon and A Journey to the Centre of the Earth he wrote numerous brillinat short stories on various scientific and other themes.
