Rights of Man

An Englishman who came to America in 1774, Thomas Paine was a political philosopher who promoted change through revolution rather than reform. He is most renowned for his activities advocating democracy. Rights of Man was written as an answer to Edmund Burke’s reflections on the Revolution in France and states Paine’s belief that men have “natural rights” and urges individuals to free themselves from governmental tyranny.
